Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6
I don’t know where you are going. I don’t know what you are facing. But I know that God goes with you.
Sometimes life seems too heavy. We can find ourselves staring down insurmountable obstacles; or we find ourselves lost. Some days we find ourselves worn out, at a loss, exhausted, beaten up, and it’s only a Monday!
But the Father reminds us, he won’t leave—whatever you are facing. He won’t forsake—no matter the poor choices, the discontent, or bad attitudes we hold on to. He goes with us.
We can be strong even though our circumstances are stronger than us. We can be brave in the face of dark times, overwhelming odds, or the drudgery of another day. He goes with us where we go. He goes with us as we go.
So we have nothing to fear, and nothing needs terrorize us. He goes with us.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:7
And in going with us he gives. The gift is peace. It cannot be bought, it cannot be sold, it cannot be made, it cannot be found. It can only be given. And only, truly by Jesus.
To be given peace does not mean that hardships won’t come. It doesn’t mean fearful times won’t arise. But it does mean we don’t need to fear. It does mean that we can find contentment even in the undesirable.
And the gift isn’t given by the world’s economy. It’s not a trade. It’s not a compromise, it’s not a gift that will later require a return of some kind. Jesus doesn’t give as the world gives. It’s free, it’s unqualified. It’s peace. And the true peace of it comes from the fact that the gift is God himself. He goes with us.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20
So Jesus sends us out, tells us to go. But he goes with us to the very end—and all the steps in between. I like the way The Message puts it: “I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day…”
Day after day after day. That means today and yesterday and the days to come. As I said at the beginning, I don’t know where you are going today. I don’t know what you are facing. But God goes with you.
There is nothing to fear, nothing to dread, no mountain too high, no pain too great; there is nothing and nowhere that God does not go with you. He goes with you day after day after day—and that means today.
